Stormdrain Scene

This was a theoretical level built using several components in 3D Studio Max, and then ported over to Epic's Unreal Development Kit. I tried to combine all elements into one scene - man made structures, foliage and surface rocks/mud. The foliage (conifer trees, various bushes and vines) added to the sides of the scene and gave a disused feel, and the colour of the centre mud track gives a directional feel.

I drew inspiration from the film 'Them' which has a final scene based in a storm drain, and created basic plan drawing of the level, before blocking it out in 3DsMax. Each component was modelled and received a basic surface texture, which was built in UDK. Details were added in the form of overlaid alpha channel images to add dirt and grime, and also normal maps wherever I felt it was needed. Only a lighting effect was used.

Each man-made object was modelled as a concrete object (with sharp, chamfered edges) and was given an appropriate level of algae from years of water flow and stagnation.

Using layers of a few simple objects created a fairly complex foliage environment to the sides of the track.

The whole scene was modelled, textured and assembled in the space of two whole days, including remembering what everything does in UDK again.
